PLAZA ESPAŅA

PLAZA ESPAŅA was first known as Plaza Aduana. It was renamed Plaza de los Martires de la Integridad de la Patria in 1897. This project was initiated by the Spanish government in 1896 to honor their soldiers who died during the Philippine Revolution. Funds were solicited from Spanish and loyal Filipino citizens. The plaza’s present name was given in 1902 by the American government. It was destroyed in 1945.

Plaza Espaņa was restored by the Intramuros Administration in 1982. It was renovated in 2000. That same year, Spain’s Queen Sophia unveiled the KING PHILIP II STATUE as part of the closing celebration of the Centenary of Philippine Independence.
