The MANILA HIGH SCHOOL is the first public high school in Manila . It stands at the corner of Muralla and Victoria Streets.
The site was formerly occupied by the PARIAN DE SAN JOSE. Parian
comes from an old Tagalog word meaning “marketplace.” The ninth and
last of the Chinese markets to be built in Manila , this Parian was
also known as the silk market of San Jose .
In 1889, the new building of the ESCUELA MUNICIPAL DE NIŅAS rose on the
site. Opened in 1864 under the administration of the Daughters of
Charity, the school moved from its original location on Arzobispo
Street .
It was reopened as
the Manila High School in 1906. Renamed as Manila South High School ,
one of the city's four major educational institutions in 1921. It was,
finally, renamed Araullo High School in 1930.
The school was closed during the Japanese occupation. The building was
converted into an armory. It was destroyed in 1945. After the war,
classes were re-opened at different buildings in Manila . The name
Manila High School was revived in 1958. In 1967, the school was unified
in a new building on the original site in Intramuros.
