POSTIGO DEL PALACIO

Built in 1662, this led to the palaces of the Archbishop and the Governor-General, who used it whenever they wanted to enter or leave the city unnoticed. This gate was named after the Palacio del Gobernador nearby. Postigo is Spanish for "postern" or small gate".

The entrance was renovated from 1782 to 1783 under the direction of miliraty engineer Tomas Sanz. National hero Dr. Jose Rizal was taken to Bagumbayan (site of his execution and now Rizal Park) through this gate from his cell in Fort Santiago.

During the Filipino-American War, American soldiers used the side chambers as prison cells for Filipino prisoners-of-war. One of them was a lieutenant in the revolutionary army, Manuel L. Quezon.

The gate was badly damaged in the Battle of Manila in 1945. It was restored in 1986. The bridge was excavated and restored from 1982 to 1983.
