Connected to the Parian gate by a low rampart (falsabraga) is the BALUARTE DE SAN GABRIEL. This bulwark was the site of the first HOSPITAL DE SAN GABRIEL.
The
area beside the Pasig River was formerly swampland that was filled in
by the Chinese when they built their first Parian. The land was later
occupied by the Dominicans or Order of Preachers who arrived in 1587.
They were the fourth religious order to come to the Philippines .
